Setting up the hemodialysis machine and attaching the dialyzer and tubing to the machine in order to assemble it for use are typical duties for a dialysis technician. To prepare the apparatus, the technician then blends the dialysate and primes the dialyzer with saline or heparinized (a complex organic acid) solution. The dialysis technician brings the patient to the dialysis room and places them on the lounge chair next to the hemodialysis machine after setting the machine up properly. Before beginning treatment, the patient's pre-dialysis weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration rate are noted. To allay any fears, the dialysis procedure and how the hemodialysis machine works are also explained to the patient. A small needle with tubes attached to the end is inserted after the dialysis technician thoroughly cleans the patient's access area (typically the arm). The technician must calculate how much fluid needs to be removed and replaced during the dialysis procedure in order for the procedure to be completed correctly.
