The role of a dialysis technician, which encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, can be summed up as a specialist who attends to a patient throughout the entire dialysis procedure. A dialysis technician's typical tasks include setting up the hemodialysis machine, connecting the dialyzer and tubing to the machine, and putting the machine together for use. The technician then mixes the dialysate and primes the dialyzer with saline or heparinized (a complex organic acid) solution to prepare the apparatus. The hemodialysis machine is properly set up before the patient is brought to the dialysis room and seated on the lounge chair next to it. The patient's pre-dialysis weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, and respiration rate are recorded before starting treatment. The patient is also given a detailed explanation of the hemodialysis procedure to allay any fears. Following a thorough cleaning of the patient's access area by the dialysis technician, a tiny needle with tubes attached to the end is inserted (typically the arm). For the dialysis procedure to be successfully completed, the technician must determine how much fluid needs to be removed and replaced.
